Envision Opelika, in partnership with the City of Opelika, engaged Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood to create a comprehensive development plan for Downtown Opelika. The result was the Downtown Opelika Development Guide, which includes recommendations for the 16-block downtown commercial district façade treatments, accessibility, a color palette, a 3-D animation detailing the vision for the downtown district and implementation strategies for future leadership, management, design improvements and business recruitment. The Downtown Opelika Development Guide won the 2011 Franklin M. Setzer Outstanding Urban Design Award, an award presented by the Alabama Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA) to a project in which urban design is an integral part of the planning process and is a major concern of the built environment. In 2012, Opelika became the first known city/town/county in Alabama to be recognized for an award on the national level by the APA when it was awarded the Dr. Vernon Deines Memorial Award for an Outstanding Small Town or Rural Plan. The downtown revitalization program has resulted in a number of successful streetscape designs and improvements by the city, with property owners, businesses and even residential investments emerging downtown.
